Throwing rice at the newlyweds, sometimes referred to as the “wedding toss”, has been a tradition for years. The rice-throwing “ritual” is an ancient custom that has long symbolized fertility and the blessing of many children. Today it symbolizes prosperity and abundance. Yet many couples are in search of something a bit more environmentally friendly or unique alternative.
Consider these creative alternatives:
1. Flower petals – either fresh or freeze-dried - to match your wedding colors
2. Fresh lavender buds – they’re approximately the size of rice
3. Potpourri (in a doily cone) for a nicely scented touch
4. Bubbles – a great choice if you’ve invited a lot of children to the ceremony; these bubble bottles can also double as wedding favors
5. White dove releases – though peaceful and romantic, keep in mind only a few guests will be able to participate)
6. Butterfly releases – certainly can create a “wow” effect but again, most of the guests can’t participate
7. Balloons without strings (most latex balloons are 100% biodegradable; it’s the string that are not). You can usually arrange with a balloon company to hand out the balloons to your guests so you’re not having to worry about where to store them during the ceremony.
8. Bird seed (though if you have some strong-armed guests, this could actually hurt a little)
9. Sparklers – a nice touch for a night-time wedding; you can often match your wedding colors
10. Confetti – an inexpensive option but often requires the most clean-up; you can purchase it or make your own
11. Exploding streamer bottles – can often be purchased in your local party store or ordered online and make for a great photo op.
12. Ringing bells – another option that can double as a wedding keepsake when you imprint your names and wedding dates on them.
Top considerations when making your choice:
• The venue may have restrictions
• There may be a clean-up charge
• Your budget
• Some of these options may become a permanent adornment to your hair/dress for the reception.
